In most European countries, including Spain, surrogacy is illegal and strictly prohibited by law. As a result, many prospective parents turn to the United States for help in having their own biological children. Furthermore, American customs and laws, plus the wide availability of outstanding medical expertise, make the United States the country of preference for surrogacy overseas.
For international couples, having children via surrogacy in the United States can be surprisingly easy. All that is usually required is 2-4 trips to the United States. An added benefit is that all children born in the United States automatically become American citizens. As a result, most international parents can return to their home country with both the American birth certificate and the American passport of their newborn within 3-4 weeks of birth.
Cost of Surrogacy Abroad
The favorable exchange rate between the U.S. Dollar and many other currencies may make it even more cost effective for patients to choose surrogates from the United States. Currently the Euro, Peso, British Pound and Japanese Yen all have favorable exchange rates with the U.S. Dollar.
The doctors at San Diego Fertility Center have years of experience helping international patients become parents through gestational surrogacy. Our team will help you evaluate the benefits of gestational surrogacy and provide you with information about costs, legal issues, and treatment protocols. In addition, we will work with you to find the ideal surrogate mother for you. After we identify a suitable surrogate, she will go through a screening process. Once that is complete, the cycle can begin.
San Diego Fertility Center works with all surrogate agencies. Our mission is to provide you with the care and direction you need to succeed in becoming parents. We will guide you in the clinical aspects of the surrogacy process while working hand in hand with your agency to make sure you are provided with proper support and a reasonable timeline of events. Timing depends on the surrogate’s menstrual cycle and any scheduling conflicts for the surrogate, intended parents or professional staff.
