Book NowSpotting During Fertility Treatment Doesn’t Necessarily Mean Bad News
Unexpected vaginal bleeding is one of the most common concerns patients have during fertility treatments. Spotting can trigger anxiety, especially for those undergoing In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) or Intrauterine Insemination (IUI). Fortunately, in most cases, there is a simple explanation, and it doesn’t necessarily signal bad news. After an embryo transfer or IUI, there are several potential causes for spotting that are perfectly normal.
Common Causes of Spotting During Fertility Treatment
- Implantation Bleeding:Some patients may experience light bleeding after a blastocyst transfer. According to Dr. Kettel, this light spotting can happen when the blastocyst implants in the uterine wall. Implantation bleeding is a normal part of early pregnancy and doesn’t indicate any issues with the pregnancy.
- Bleeding After Intercourse or Exercise:Sometimes, sexual activity or strenuous exercise can irritate the cervix, causing light spotting. This type of bleeding is usually harmless and subsides on its own.
- Fibroids and Polyps:Uterine fibroids and polyps are common, non-cancerous growths that can develop in the uterus or cervix. While they can cause light bleeding during the cycle or in early pregnancy, they don’t necessarily pose a risk to pregnancy. An ultrasound can often confirm that everything is progressing normally.
- Infection:A mild bacterial infection in the cervix can sometimes lead to occasional bleeding. This type of infection is generally harmless and can be easily treated with antibiotics.
